What is the Railjet?

What is the Railjet train?

The Railjet is the flagship service of ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen), Austria's national railway. Launched on 14 December 2008 and built by Siemens on the Viaggio Comfort platform, it quickly became one of Central Europe's most recognisable trains.

Unlike the ICE or TGV, the Railjet uses a push-pull locomotive-hauled design — allowing seamless operation across Austria and into Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy and Slovakia. A faster variant, the Railjet Express (RJX), covers Vienna–Salzburg with fewer intermediate stops. New-generation Railjets arrived in 2024, and 14 double-decker DoSto units are due from 2026.

Lower carbon footprint

Significantly reduced energy use compared to older generations — and far less CO₂ than flying the equivalent route.

Accessible for everyone

Wheelchair toilets, mobility spaces, a dedicated family zone, and quiet carriages on every Railjet service.

Children under 6 travel free. Ages 6–14 pay 50% of the standard fare. From age 15, full adult prices apply. Always verify current child fare policies at oebb.at before booking.

Can I take my bicycle on the Railjet?+
